Gugulethu Sofia Mbatha is more popular under her stage name and screen name Gugu Mbatha Raw. Her popularity grew for her role in the BBC Science Fiction TV show Doctor Who. Handler continued her stand-up career by performing in the Comedy Central Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour, which was a tour in the United States. The stand-up shows she has performed have been aired on VH1 as well as Comedy Central's Premium Blend and HBO. In 2010, she was confirmed for the role of host at 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The only woman to ever host VMAs, after Roseanne Bar.
